Meg Ryan
Meg Ryan, blonde-haired and blue-eyed
she was born Margaret Mary Emily Hyra in Fairfield Connecticut to Susan
(Duggan), a former actress and English teacher, as well as Harry Hyra, a maths
teacher. Her heritage includes Ruthenian, Polish and Irish as well as German.
("Hyra") is her Ruthenian surname "Ryan", is her maternal
grandmother's maiden. Meg graduated from Bethel high school in Bethel in June
1979. She relocated to New York and majored as journalist at New York
University. Meg Ryan was her name and she started acting to earn money as she
finished her education. 1981 was her first big screen appearance. She played
Candice Bergen's baby girl in the film by George Cukor Rich and Famous (1981).
She was a candidate for auditions and was named Betsy in the daily television
soap as the World turns (1956). The show starred her from 1982 to 1984. Meg was
also a part of the TV series One of the Boys (1982) but it was swiftly
cancelled. In 1984, Meg emigrated to Hollywood and was offered a role in the
western-themed television series Wildside (1985). Meg had a small role in Top
Gun (1986), and then was included in Steven Spielberg's Innerspace (1987) In
which she co-starred with Dennis Quaid. She again co-starred with Quaid in the
remake of D.O.A. (1988) and the couple married on Saint Valentine's Day in
1991. Meg appeared in 1989's When Harry Met Sally... (1989), and the restaurant
scene was made famous. Meg was nominated twice for the Golden Globe and BAFTA.
In 1990, she co-starred with Tom Hanks in Joe Versus the Volcano (1990) and
this time she played three roles as DeDe/Angelica/Patricia. She starred
alongside Tom in the very successful Sleepless in Seattle (1993) for which she
was again nominated for the Golden Globe. In 1994, Meg decided to act against
type when she appeared as an alcoholic wife and mother in the film When a Man
Loves a Woman (1994). After that, Meg returned to her "cute" I.Q.
(1994) and French Kiss (1996). The year 1994 was the year that Meg won the
Harvard Hasty Pudding Award for being "Woman of the Year" and was
voted as being one of "The 50 most beautiful people in the world
1994" by People Magazine.
